Beloved Belongings & Mental Health

Dear Readers,

This is a response to the Beloved Photo Challenge.

It is a late response but I wanted to participate in the challenge nevertheless.

I have interpreted beloved as meaning my “beloved” belongings.

The following are the most favourite items I own and the ones that I cannot survive without with exception of my phone from which these pictures were taken.


I believe that caring for your body is a manifestation of self-love. That is why I like to invest in good skin care products and pamper myself. Of late I am very fond of using the Olay Anti-Ageing Day Cream. It is very light in its texture and sits well on my skin. I discovered this cream after using a bunch of very expensive day creams that clogged my pores and caused my skin to break out. I definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for something light to use daily.

The British Rose Body Butter by Body Shop is another product that I use to pamper myself. It is very fragrant and moisturising. It has helped to revive dry skin in winters and has nurtured my damaged skin. I recommend this to anyone who is looking repair damaged and dry skin. Vaseline is another skin care product that I cannot live without because it is the best remedy for chapped lips, a problem that can severely affect my focus and productivity plainly because its irritating and distracting.

Adventures for My Soul is the best self-help book that I have ever read. It is a very light and quick read. Each chapter of this book ends with an exercise that helps the reader spot their negative or self-sabotaging though patterns. Some exercises in the book allow the reader to develop self-awareness. This is a book that I have highlighted and underlined and repeatedly revert to for any life advice. It has enabled me to understand the concept of self-love and prioritising myself. It has played a huge role in making me love my own company and putting myself first. It is also partly the reason for why and how I learnt to say no and to nourish the nudge of going on my first solo adventure to Amsterdam.  It is truly an adventure for your soul and highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to change their thoughts and change their life.

The colouring pens are in the picture because I colour to reduce my anxiety. Colouring helps me to stay in the moment and focus on the present instead of worrying about the future or the past. It is a great stress buster and I have bought an adult colouring book to relieve my anxiety and practice mindfulness.

The prayer beads and Hanuman Chalisa are religious items. I am a Hindu by religion and praying before bed gets me to sleep peacefully. Chanting mantras and using the prayer beads also helps to relieve anxiety. Although, I am not very religious but I feel that I need these two items in my bag to have a great day and a great sleep. Using the prayer beads while travelling or during emotional distress helps to divert my thoughts and focus my energy on the present moment. Perhaps, it is a form of meditation for me.

Earphones are present in the picture because they help me evade the present world and step into a world of fantasy while listening to my favourite music. I usually listen to music on my way to work in the car. It is my ten minute escape from reality into a dream world  carved out with creative Imagination.


Kindle is something I use every night before bed to put myself to sleep. The best thing about Kindle is no glare. Unlike an iPad or a phone, it doesn’t wake me up with a bright light right before going to  bed. Bed time reading has greatly reduced my night-time anxieties and insomnia. I recommend it to anyone looking to improve their sleep hygiene and reduce their insomnia.

My journal is something I can obviously not live without. It is the place to deconstruct my day, my thoughts and emotions, challenge my negative thought patterns and disclose all my secrets and emotions. I write down my feelings for the day before going to bed and it helps to remove the pressure of living with them. It helps me to feel light before going to bed.

At present, I am doing a 30 day challenge of writing down three positive things that happened in my day in order to rewire my brain to focus on the positives in life. It has me helped a lot in shifting my thought patterns. It has allowed me to rise Above the negativity that sometimes creeps into my thoughts. I got this from a Robin Sharma video. If you haven’t checked out his videos, you must head over to his youtube channel to see his inspirational videos. He has helped me achieve some significant goals in my life and he is also partly the reason why I started blogging. I am a different person today partly because of his ideas and inspiration.

Lastly, the laptop is there because it is my connection to you guys – to a whole community of bloggers and lots of inspiration. Like everybody else, I browse articles, YouTube and Netflix on it. I also work on my laptop because my workplace requires us to carry our own laptops… so this one is no brainer really. It would be difficult to sustain a productive day without having my laptop especially at work.
